For most of my life, I struggled to find my purpose. Like many, I explored what felt good, what seemed right, and what others expected. In the process, I discovered labels—son, father, friend—but none truly defined me. At my core, I realized one truth: I am a child of God. Everything else—my personality, beliefs, strengths, and weaknesses—simply shaped what I did, not who I was.
From the age of seventeen, I felt God calling me to ministry. His message was clear, but fear and resistance consumed me. I ran, designing a life of my own making. That life was marked by peaks and valleys, including a broken marriage and raising two young sons as a single father. I kept one foot in the church, singing in the choir and participating in plays, but I avoided surrendering fully to God’s purpose. I was afraid—of what He might ask of me and who I might have to become.
Over time, God’s voice persisted. In 2006, I moved to North Carolina and finally listened. I wrote God Speaks, a book I had resisted for years. But even after that moment of clarity, I fell back into despair, finding myself homeless by the end of 2007. God had warned me: “You must lose everything to have everything.” I had to let go of my false priorities.
Through homelessness and hardship, I learned to listen. By 2011, I surrendered completely to God’s call. Now, I live with purpose, letting God guide my steps. His miracles have shown me that surrender is not loss—it’s freedom.
Will you take the first step to surrender and discover the life God designed for you?
